Accomplished a prep-goal yesterday!

1 Attachment(s)
I finished setting aside .22 LR ammo. I vacuum sealed my last brick of 1,000 rounds for a total of 10,000 rounds. I should be able to kill enough food with that to take me through whatever we might face. :D

I love the picture... they glitter like gold!

I've got my other calibers covered by reloading/bullet casting (9mm for defense and .30-06 for "big animals").

Very inspiring. Which .22LR do you buy, or is it a mix of brands? In that case, which do you buy the most of?

I try to buy a box or two of the Federal 550 at Wal-Mart every month, but some months I miss.

:D It is actually a Savage Cub... it was my daughter's 5th birthday present. I stripped it and stained it "cherry blossom pink", and my wife painted the daisies and vines on it along with my daughter's name by the bolt. She is still a little afraid to pull the trigger, and the scope eye relief is a bit of a challenge. I got her a cheap practice scope to put with her toys - she uses it to look at birds.

Nice! What kind of vacuum sealer do you use and do you recommend it?

It is a Black-n-Decker, and it has worked very well for us. I got it for $30 on clearance at Wal-Mart. We probably done about 75 feet of material without a problem. I use the regular "Food Saver" bags from Wal-Mart -- those rolls are actually better than the B&D rolls.

It is all Federal 550 from Wal-Mart ($11.97). I started this year picking up one box every week when we shopped for groceries. I had set 10,000 as my goal. In order to bag them by 1,000s I had to count 100 out of every other box. I've got about 400 or so left over for plinking.

Curious....why did you de-boxify them?

I just leave them in their boxes and pack them with a drier in an air tight military ammo box.

Those plastic bags look delicate.

Survivalblog has an article up right now on ammo storage. He is against vacuum packing unless its loosely packed, says it can unseat bullets.

BS,those bags are pretty darn strong that are used with vacuum packing.

Cool, however you can get them interested . . . I'm looking forward to my little girl (3yo) getting into it.

I had some older boxes (3 years or so) that had had gotten quite nasty green on the bullet. I was hoping that the vaccum sealing would prevent oxidation. Also, 1,000 rounds sealed flat like that fits real nicely in a backpack.

I'm not worried about unseating the bullets. Perhaps if it was a larger caliber, but not .22 LR.

Went to WM about a month ago and bought a box of 22 ammo. Then got the 3rd degree, had to have my DL#, had to know pistol or rifle. WTF????

Haven't bought there since. Anybody know what the deal is?

I know the policies vary by store. At some stores they require me to pay for th ammo in the sporting goods department. At others I can just put it in my basket. Some of them actually have to walk me to the front of the store with my ammo which has been paid for! All of them ask if it is for a handgun, and if I'm over 21.

It won't be very long and Wal-Mart will be completely out of the gun market. Both stores in Greeley, CO, don't carry any firearms (but they have ammo).
